Sicamous
Sicamous
is located just east of Salmon Arm
by around 31 km (19 miles) at the junction of Trans-Canada Hwy 1
and Hwy 97A.
Shuswap
Lake
Sicamous is situated between the north end of Mara Lake and the
middle of Shuswap Lake's Salmon Arm. With the proximity to Shuswap
Lake being so convenient, Sicamous has evolved itself into a houseboating
mecca.
Canada's
Houseboat Capital
Sicamous has declared itself as the Houseboat Capital of Canada
providing the gateway to the Shuswap. Various sizes of houseboats
can be rented. Some units come with hot tubs, fireplaces and excellent
lounging areas.
Save
Money on Renting a Houseboat
If you want to save money, the secret on renting a houseboat is
to book it in September. Usually the rates are cut in half after
the Labour Day long weekend. Now that the kids have gone back to
school you can explore the many beaches along the lake with lots
of room. Weather at this time is a little cooler at night but very
hot in the day.
Golf
Courses
For golfing you have a choice of a couple of courses nearby. One
a 9-hole course is located at the east end of Sicamous called Eagle
River Golf. The other course is called Hyde Mountain Golf Course
and is located just south of town at Mara Lake.
Mara
Lake
With the Shuswap being so close you might forget about Mara Lake.
Located 10 km (6 miles) south of Sicamous on Hwy 97A, Mara Lake
is very pleasant. Please take the time to explore this lake as you
will not regret it. Clean warm water, excellent beaches and great
accommodation surround this lake.
Malakwa
Suspension Bridge
For exploring around Sicamous try going out 17 km (10.5 miles) east
of town on Hwy 1 towards Revelstoke
to Malakwa. Malakwa
is the site of an exciting suspension bridge spanning the Eagle
River originally built in 1915.
Watch
for Malakwa Road
Take Malakwa Road near the Malakwa Cafe for 1.5 km (1 mile) until
you see the railroad tracks, then turn left onto Summerville Husted
Road, cross the tracks, go down the Malakwa Suspension Bridge Road
to the parking lot.
Craigellachie
If you happen to travel to Malakwa,
make sure you also visit Craigellachie. Located 45 km (28 miles)
west of Revelstoke, Craigellachie is the site of the historic Last
Spike of the CPR.
Seymour
Arm
For the more adventurous, there is also the Perry River Forest Service
Road that turns into Shuswap Lake's Seymour Arm 3 km (1.8 miles)
east of Craigellachie before Taft.
